HIV/AIDS Literacy Education

  • HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus
  • AIDS stands for Acquired Immune deficiency syndrome
  • HIV/AIDs test is done using HIV Rapid test algorithm that can be either by Serial or Parallel testing Algorithm
  • In Nigeria HIV/AIDs is carried out by health workers using serial test algorithms.
  • Serial testing algorithm is the use of Determine test kit, if a client test Negative to HIV antibody, the client status is negative and will be ask to repeat the test after 3 months.
  • If Client test positive to HIV antibody, then Unigold test kit will be used to confirm the test, if it reads positive, then treatment will commence, but if the result is Negative, Stat Pak test kit will be used to break the tie created by Determine and Unigold test kits.
  • Using Stat Pak, if the result is negative, then the client’s status is Negative but if it gives a positive result then the client is Positive and will commence treatment immediately. Stat Pak test kit is a tie-breaker it gives the final HIV test confirmation where there is Tie to break.

Who needs HIV test?

  • Any person that has not tested for the past six months or one year.
  • Any person that has been raped.
  • Any person that have had unprotected (Condomless) penetrative Vaginal, Anal, oral sex in the past six months.

HIV/AIDS Test Information

  • Before now, a confirmed HIV reactive (positive) person will not be initiated on treatment until the CD4 count result is determined, thereby making those with high CD4 to be vulnerable to opportunistic infections (OIs) and the immune system compromised before the person begins ARV drugs.
  • Recently in 2019, according to World Health Organisation(WHOs) HIV epidemic control will be attained by adopting Test and Treat/ Same day treatment. Hence, effort is geared towards epidemic control, in order to achieve reduced HIV infections below the number of AIDS-related deaths.
  • Once a person is confirmed to have HIV infection, treatment is commenced immediately with adherence counseling.
  • ART drug known as TLD not TLE is given to the client on same day for one month,  28 days appointment is given to client for ART refill of 3month depending on the client’s drug adherence level.
  • ART Adherence strategic plan is developed with the client to ensure he/she adheres to the drug usage.
  • On the day of appointment visit for ART refill, Tuberculosis (TB) and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening are cried out at every appointment visit.
  • If there is TB presumptive sign, client Sputum is collected for diagnoses at DOT center
  • If there is no TB presumptive sign, the client is place on TB preventive therapy drug (TPT) known as Isoniazid (INH) for 6 months to prevent the client from developing active TB for 2years.
  • When screened for STI, and there is STI syndrome, diagnoses is carried out and treatment is commenced immediately.
  • Once client is 6 month on ART, the client’s blood sample is collected for CD4 count and Viral load testing to determined the level of viral load suppression.
  • Once client attains high-level HIV viral Load suppression, HIV antibody on the client becomes Undetectable and Untransmitable ie U=U (meaning the person still has the virus but will not be able to transmit it to other person and will be living his or her normal life).

Difference Between TLD and TLE ART Drugs

  • TLD and TLE is an ART drug given to an HIV positive client
  • TLE is the ART given to HIV clients with several signs and symptoms.
  • TLE does not have rapid efficacy of Viral Load suppression when taken for 6 months
  • TLE makes client uncomfortable while TLD have minimal or no side effect on the HIV client.
  • TLD Have rapid efficacy of viral Load suppression within 3month or 6month of its usage.
  • TLD makes HIV antibody Undetectable and Untransmitable ie U=U.
