What causes Tuberculosis (TB)?

TB is caused by germ called Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Is TB Infectious?

Yes, it is

Like common cold, TB spreads through the air when infectious people cough, spit, talk or sneeze.

If left untreated, a person with TB can infect between 10 and 15 people every year.

What are symptoms of TB

  • Major sign is coughing for 2 weeks or more

Other signs are

  • Fever
  • Night sweat
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood

Can TB be cured?

Yes

Treatment of TB

DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Shortcourse) is the WHO recommended strategy for treatment of TB.

DOTS can successfully and permanently cure people affected by TB after completing the treatment for 6 months

TB diagnosis and treatment is free in Nigeria.

What you can do to stop TB now.

  1. Immunize your child at birth with BCG
  2. If you have been coughing constantly for 2 weeks or more, go to the nearest hospital or call on our helpline for more information and diagnosis of TB Treatment.

NOTE

  1. Make sure you complete your 6 months treatment if you have been diagnosed with the disease.
  2. Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing and do not spit indiscriminately.

How TB is affected by HIV

  • HIV lowers people’s immunity and therefore exposes them to developing other infections diseases including TB
  • TB might be the first sign of infection among people infected with HIV who do not know their HIV status
  • TB is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV (PLWH)
  • TB is curable among PLWH thereby improving their condition and chances of survival.
